Disposition:✔ When Hubert decides to put his all into something, there is no stopping him. He devotes himself to Edelgard's cause to an unhealthy extent - he'll do everything in his power to help her. It isn't just his dedication to her as a person that drives him, it's also his belief in her ideals and the world she wants to create. He is so devoted to her and these ideals that literally nothing can sway him from her side.
✔ Hubert plans and plots with the best of them, and holds his own against Those Who Slither in the Dark (the organization Edelgard and Hubert work with, despite their hatred for said group). Hubert is willing to use everything at his disposal to further Edelgard's goals, regardless of who might get hurt in the process. He's very good at planning and preparing and always seems to be two steps ahead.
✔ He's not the sort of person to act without thinking; Hubert's more prone to over-thinking than being rash. He prides himself on being able to assess any situation or ally without letting personal bias get in the way, and he (mostly) succeeds at this. Even when he distrusts someone, he can work with them. He always plans accordingly and serves as Edelgard's strategist in most routes.
✔ Hubert can hold his own in a fight; he has access to powerful dark magic and he can use lances as well. While he doesn't prefer physical fights, he can defend himself without magic. He also serves as an assassin, killing those necessary for Edelgard's plans.
✔ While Hubert is always willing to do terrible things, he does so for the greater good. Sure, his definition of "the greater good" involves throwing Fódlan into war so Edelgard can take over, but as far as he's concerned, that's the price for a better future. Hubert is willing to do awful things and ruin his own reputation if it means that the future will be brighter - ultimately, he tries to stick to his morals, but will go against them if it serves Edelgard's ideals, and will keep her hands clean.
✘ It isn't accurate to call Hubert selfless, because he isn't. He acts on his own desires, and those desires happen to align with Edelgard's. He wants what she wants - not just because she wants it, but because it's what he desires as well. With that said, almost everything else about Hubert is tailored to best fit Edelgard's needs. She requires an enforcer to ensure the most success for her path forward, so he becomes one. She requires someone to do the dirty work in the shadows that she can't do without harming her image, so he does that. Hubert's appearance and personality are structured around being intimidating and cold to better suit this. He does not always do what's best for her - when he believes he knows what will be best for her path forward, he'll do it without consulting her or even telling her about it.
✘ While he does genuinely care for Edelgard and the other Black Eagles, Hubert keeps people at arm's length. He takes a long time to warm up and even longer to trust people. He has a very hard time opening himself up to Edelgard, despite how much he cares for her. He can learn to trust others, but it's not an easy process.
✘ Hubert intentionally makes himself appear cold and cruel, leaning into that for intimidation purposes. This isn't entirely an act; Hubert is willing to be callous. He does the things Edelgard can't do - either because it would taint her reputation or because she wouldn't want to. As long as he sees it as necessary, he will do anything for her and her ideals, no matter how horrid it might be.
✘ As the eldest child of House Vestra, Hubert was raised to become the next Minister of the Imperial Household. This is a position that manages the emperor's affairs, but they're also in charge of all sorts of dirty work for the Empire. Hubert decided he would dedicate his life to Edelgard at a young age. His entire upbringing and outlook on life are vastly different from a normal person's. He lives to serve Edelgard, and he always has. With all this said, Hubert is still his own person and can function without her, it just won't be easy for him!
Under pressure:Hubert's motivations in Fire Emblem: Three Houses all center around Edelgard. She is someone he cares deeply for and idolizes to an extent - her goals and ideals are also his own, and he goes above and beyond to make them a reality, both because this is what she strives for and because this is what he wants as well.
So obviously without Edelgard here, that's going to change a few things. Hubert is going to be motivated primarily by the idea of getting back home - and however he thinks that may be accomplished. Since he's from so early in canon, he wants to return to ensure Edelgard's success. (This will only become even more important if/when he hears about the other routes in Three Houses and how all of those involved Edelgard dying.) His primary goal initially is going to be gathering information and not standing out - in other words, play by the rules and observe and investigate.
While he does have tremendous trust issues to work through, Hubert can and will ally himself with people who are like-minded. Those who are proactive in searching for information or are willing to be more patient with him while he figures out how to handle physical affection are certainly going to be helpful!
Ultimately, his goals all exist only back home - he has no reason to try to continue any fighting with potential castmates regardless of route or canon points. But since he isn't going to be able to get back home immediately, he's going to have to learn how to adapt and live a more chill life, so that's going to be interesting. For the most part he'll be focused on gathering information from people, but that tends to be a great way to accidentally stumble into some friendships so maybe he'll have to actually deal with his trust issues at some point.
Hubert is not one to crack under pressure - he's learned to handle stress and uncertainty well over the years and always dedicates himself to his goals. He's more prone to overworking himself than he is to giving in to external pressure; he's used to allying himself with people he hates because if that will allow him to reach his and Edelgard's goals, that will be worth it. He fights to the bitter end and will not give up on what he believes in.
Condition upon arrival:He's in great health; no injuries or life-threatening illnesses here!
Abilities:Fire Emblem: Three Houses allows the player character (Byleth) to instruct their students and reclass them as they see fit. I will be following Hubert's canon class line: Noble → Monk → Dark Mage → Dark Bishop. This basically just means that Hubert is a dark mage, and pretty much exactly what you'd expect from the class. He's very skilled with offensive magic, but cannot take any physical hits and is much better suited to long-range combat.
Hubert's skills are never remarked on as being incredible or noteworthy, though he can be a pretty powerful mage in game. He has access to five dark magic spells, some of which have nasty side effects like rendering a unit incapable of movement after combat, or having a high chance for a critical hit and dealing more damage. Most of this doesn't translate well to roleplay, so basically he's just got some cool dark magic spells at his disposal, but nothing overpowered.
There is one exception to this: Hubert's version of the Warp spell. This spell seems to be dark magic, although it is never a spell he can use in game. It's basically just a cutscene spell so people can be moved about as needed, which is why we know next to nothing about it. Considering that it has the power to move the player's entire army, it's probably pretty powerful? Anyway, the point is that since I have no idea how it works, I'd like to nerf it entirely. No more teleporting for him.
Like all characters in Fire Emblem: Three Houses, Hubert is capable of picking up and using a bunch of different weapons, but given how low his strength stat is, you do not want to let him fight physically. He's been trained with a lance enough that he can defend himself (though it isn't anywhere near as effective as his dark magic). Otherwise he relies solely on reason magic (offensive magic; in his case, dark magic) and has very limited training in faith magic (healing/white magic). At best he can heal some small cuts and scrapes, but he can't do anything more than that.
While less a power and more "a thing he can do", Hubert is also very knowledgeable about how to kill people in various ways, with poisons as one of his favorites. Thankfully, that is very specific to what's available in his world, and it's not like he'll be going around poisoning people all the time anyway.
Inventory:● The clothes on his back.
● A couple of hidden knives in said clothes.
● That's it, that's all he's got.
Gembond: Emerald.
Gem Location: On the back of his right hand.
« MISCELLANEOUS »
Sample:Bernadetta - This thread has a wide variety of emotional range, including Hubert's softer sides as he actually tries not to be a jerk to Bernadetta.
Claude - In this one, Hubert and Claude don't trust each other as far as they can throw one another, but they're willing to talk.
Will - This thread shows Hubert's typical interactions with strangers... and also his dark sense of humor.
Let me know if you'd like to see a specific example of another part of Hubert's personality; I think these threads cover most of it, though!
Notes:Here's Hubert's wiki page if you'd like a more detailed run-down on anything! Hubert serves as a villain in 3/4 routes in Three Houses, but he's being taken from the one route where he's an ally for this portrayal. Also Byleth, the player character, can be either male or female - if it comes up, Byleth is female (this is just to keep things consistent)! Finally, the only students that were recruited to the Black Eagles house in this playthrough were the Ashen Wolves (the DLC characters). All of this doesn't really change anything for Hubert, it's mostly for consistency's sake that I'm mentioning it!
